Wood Type

The Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection at the University of Texas at Austin- Most wood type faces were copied from type foundries, but some were unique (and their condensed typefaces were often just scaled versions of the Roman typeface...type crime!).
- Rob Roy studied graphic design at Yale, and then started the first undergraduate level graphic design program (in Minneapolis).
- Photo type & chromo lithography pushed out the use of the printing press.
- Rob Roy began collecting wood type to use as a study tool for his students in Minneapolis.
- Roy sold his collection to the Moma in NYC in 1966. It quickly moved to the UT basement where it sat for years, and has been in the UT art building since 1993.
