Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type @ UT

"The Rob Roy Kelly
American Wood Type Collection at
The University of Texas at Austin"

This photo shows shelves on the left hand side that holds boxes of wood type. There is a press in the left front. and against the window are cases filled with type drawers. The case on the far left is a great example of Upper and lower cases. There are models of other presses on the center case.

The book, "American Wood Type 1828 - 1900" was written by Rob Roy Kelly and was the first book that looked at the history of type. To this day it is considered the bible for Typesetters. It was first published in 1969 in hard cover came out in paperback in 1977.

Rob Roy Kelly got his graduate degree in Graphic Design at Yale University.

Kelly was the first person to bring Swiss Designers to the University of Arts in Philidelphia.

One of the reasons wood type took the place of metal was the fact that it weighs quite a bit less than metal. It was easier and cheaper to ship out to the printers.

In 1834, William Leavenworth introduced a lateral router hooked up to a pantograph as an implement to reproduce type.
