Wood Type Facts

1. Chromatic types print in two different colors and also overlap in places to create a third color. Produced by Edwin Allen. Most famous in the 100-page Specimen of Chromatic Type and Borders in 1874.

2. The most commercially produced method to produce wood type was the end-cut method. It cut out the negative space of the letter out of a block of wood.

3. The Veneer process was created by cutting a thin piece of Holly Wood in the shape of the letter and then securely attached to the face of a wood block.

4. The Veneer process was also the least expensive method of producing wood types.

5. In Blackletter script, the darkness(boldness) of the letter dominates the lightness of the page. It was developed in the Middle Ages and has distinct styles such as Textura and Rotunda.
