Wood Type Facts

There are three different ways of producing wood type: end-cut, die-cut, and veneer. There is also celluloid or enameled production but Kelly does not have any type made from this method.

End-cut is the most common to create wood type, it is basically chipping away the wood around the letter to actually create the letter in the hardwood.

The invention of steam power made it possible to create end-cut wood type faster which also opened doors to new designs that were able to be produce in a fraction of the time.

John McCreary patented the die-cut method in 1852. You can see a lot of similarities in William Page's work in 1887 that is associated with McCreary's patented method.

At the time of the veneer method, it was pretty popular because J.E. Hamilton could sell his wood types for cheaper than the other type companies. The other guys were using the router/pantograph method which was more expensive to produce.
